welcome welcome to the web site of steve and janet baggs from brent knoll, somerset, uk. here you will find occasional updates mostly (but not exclusively) about that great british passion – the weather. author stephen baggs posted on 5 april 2012 28 february 2017 categories miscellany tags welcome july 2018 summary july started with a low pressure system edging into south-west england, a change from june’s dominant high pressure. this system brought some welcome rainfall and devon and cornwall had thunderstorms during the day, but it was mid-afternoon by the time the rain arrived here. in 10 minutes from 1520 we recorded 4mm of rain, twice june’s total, with a shower later on bringing the day’s total to 4.4mm. after that little reminder of what rain was like, it was back to the high pressure, warmth and sunshine as a ridge built from the azores. a small low pressure system brought a little more rain on the 4th, but the next three weeks or so were once again dominated by high pressure over the uk or close enough to block the atlantic lows, and between the 5th and 27th july we recorded just 2.4mm of rain. the south-east of the uk saw some very high temperatures, but here we were fortunate to get a sea breeze on the hottest days and the highest temperature of the month was 29.9c on the 2nd. the lowest was 11.4c on the 17th – the temperature never got down to single figures during july. it was all change from the 27th when the azores high receded south, allowing an atlantic low to move from iceland to the west of scotland, close enough to bring us some cloud and rain. it then remained static until the end of the month, its progress blocked by high pressure over scandinavia, so the last few days of july were blustery and cool. a total of 7.8mm of rain fell from the 28th to the 31st. the average temperature for july was 19.3c, making this the warmest july since the station was set up (and the first month where temperatures never fell to single figures), and the rainfall total was 17mm – our lowest july rainfall total. author stephen baggs posted on 1 august 2018 categories weather june 2018 summary – new heat and rainfall records june’s weather was dominated by high pressure, either over the uk or near enough to influence the weather. the first half of june saw high pressure moving from the atlantic around the north of the uk with a very slack pressure gradient across the country. the result was warm and quiet weather in a gentle north-easterly breeze. the sunshine was intermittent, with cloud often making its way across from the north sea or up from the english channel, but there was no rain. the middle of the month saw a change in the setup, with storm hector passing north of scotland on the 14th. this system brought the first rain of the month – 0.6mm fell on the 14th – and was followed by more atlantic lows which bought a further 1.4mm of rain over the next few days. on the 20th a ridge of high pressure from the azores put a stop to the procession of lows, and developed into an area of high pressure centred over the uk by the 23rd. this high remained with us for the rest of the month, moving very slowly north-east and bringing clear blue skies, sunshine and heat. temperatures were in the high 20s by day, with a maximum of 30.1c on the 26th, but dipped to 7c under clear night skies on the 21st. by the end of the month, though, the nights were getting uncomfortably warm despite cloudless skies. apart from the warmth, a notable feature of this spell of weather was the very dry air – humidity during the day was often well below 50%, and reached a low of 17% on the 26th. this may have helped to make the heat more bearable for those of us who aren’t too keen on it. overall, then, june was a hot, dry month. the average temperature was 17.6c making it by far the warmest june we have recorded, a degree warmer than june 2017 (which brought us that record high of 32.8c on midsummer day). the rainfall total was 2.0mm, way below our previous minimum of 12.4mm in may 2010. for a comparison i looked up the met office rainfall records for 1976, the year of the long drought which ended only when a minister for rain was appointed. in that year, brent knoll recorded 7mm of rain in april, but there are no entries after that date. a rain gauge at burnham-on-sea, just down the road, recorded 23mm in june 1976 and 8mm in july. the main feature of the 1976 drought was that it lasted so long, of course, and the knoll isn’t yet looking as parched as it was in 1976 – but those figures do help to put this month’s total of 2mm in context. it has been remarkably dry. author stephen baggs posted on 1 july 2018 30 july 2018 categories weather may 2018 summary the first half of may was cool and dry with plenty of sunny spells, although the 6th was an exception to the low temperatures with a maximum of 25.2c after a sea mist had cleared. the first three weeks of the month saw only 9.4mm of rain, but temperatures rose in the second half of may. the final week was uncomfortably warm and humid with heavy convective showers, thanks to an unstable airflow from the mediterranean. this warmth more than offset the cool start to may and the average temperature was 13.4c, a little above normal. rainfall was below average at 34.4mm, desipte the heavy showers at the end of the month. despite the cold spell at the start of the season, the mean temperature for spring 2018 was 9.7c – exactly on the average for the last 10 years. rainfall was above normal at 198.6mm thanks to a wet and miserable march, but there were no exceptional gales. author stephen baggs posted on 2 june 2018 categories weather new weather site is live as you may already have discovered, the new web site is now live. if you link to one of the old weather pages you should have been redirected automatically. please update your bookmarks, but we’ll leave the old links in place for a while. hope you like the new site – any comments can be passed on via the contact us form. author stephen baggs posted on 25 may 2018 categories uncategorized preview the new brent knoll weather web site for the past couple of months we have been testing different software, running on a new computer, to provide the weather data for this site. for a preview of the new site click here or use the “test site” option on the menu. just be aware that there is still some tweaking going on, so the new site may go offline from time to time; and the pressure readings are wrong, because the barometer on the test kit is broken (and a repair would be eye-wateringly expensive). the switch to the new site will happen in the next few weeks. the content won’t change – it’s the same data coming from the same weather station – but the presentation will be better, with graphs for current, month-to-date and year-to-date weather data. statistics for previous years will shown as tables. the new site should load more quickly than the old one. things are changing behind the scenes as well. since the weather station was first set up we have been using weather display software running on a windows pc. this has worked reliably for over a decade, but technology has moved on and there are more economical and environmentally-friendly options than running a pc 24 hours a day. the new system runs on a raspberry pi computer using only a fraction of the energy consumed by the pc. weewx is open-source software, which produces and uploads the new web pages as well as logging and archiving the data coming from the weather station. when we switch over to the new site we will update the “old” pages with links to the new one, and do our best to make the change as seamless as possible. we hope you’ll think it’s worth it. author
